Yes, Hutton’s tales of growing up in the swamps of Florida tackling poisonous reptiles, of taking months-long vacations to visit Africa and live among the tribes there while her modeling career still blossomed in New York, of having the brilliance (and gall) to ask for the world’s first modeling contract, were certainly riveting. But the way the icon spoke was even more revealing: refusing certain conversation prompts; rambling on tangents that often had nothing to do with the questions she was being asked. It was not rude, but endearing, and the audience was enthralled. Two hours was certainly not enough time to even begin to discuss Hutton’s 40-year career, which began with a poorly paid stint at Christian Dior and ultimately came to include countless magazine covers, 44 movies, and a groundbeaking Revlon contract. Still, the amount of time devoted to discussing the ins-and-outs of the fashion industry was kept to a minimum. As Mallis said when she introduced her, „She never thought of modeling or movies as her real life. She never let that define her.“ This was apparent, as Hutton was clearly less eager to run through the timeline of her life than to share collateral anecdotes, effervescent and quirky from start to finish.Getty Images – Continue Reading BelowFor those who are interested in a more all-encompassing view, Hutton is currently working on her memoir—something we can’t wait to get our hands on. In the meantime, here are 11 gems that we learned about the legend last night, from her initial adventures in New York City to tips on style—and catching snakes.Related: Lauren Hutton’s Beauty Secret Is A Man1. She was illiterate until age 11.After her mother remarried (Hutton never knew her father), the family of three moved from Charleston to the swamplands of Tampa, which she calls „a magical place.“ Hutton spent her days as a carefree tomboy, and learned how to interact with wildlife from her stepfather. 2. She never understood why women were supposed to be subordinate to men, even from a young age. A child at the time when, after WWII, domesticity was glamorized for women in order to free up jobs for returning soldiers, Hutton says that she could never grasp this mindset. „I remember being a kid and never understanding the bouffants and the pearls. She also later noted one of her favorite aspects of her beloved tribes in Africa: „Women are government.“ – Continue Reading Below – Continue Reading BelowGetty Images 3. She knows how to catch snakes. It was a topic that came up repeatedly throughout the evening—in fact, Hutton tended to riff of Mallis‘ questions and somehow bring them back to her down-and-dirty love of nature, something that her stepfather helped foster. „He taught me how to catch six-and-a-half-foot snakes,“ she revealed. In addition to having the savvy of telling apart poisonous snakes from their harmless lookalikes, she clued the audience into the art of catching a rattle snake with a long stick, a skill we could certainly all use. 4. She got her start as a Playboy bunny, around the same time that Gloria Steinem and Debbie Harry were doing the same thing. She first came to NYC for a few-month stint, earning her rent as a „Lunchtime Bunny“ at the Playboy Club. (She explained that the position of „Lunchtime Bunny“ was reserved for 18-20 year-olds). She was there around the same time that Steinem and Harry were also working at the Club, although they never interacted, since the ladies who would later be known as the godmother of feminism and Blondie, respectively, had the distinction of being Nighttime Bunnies. – Continue Reading Below 5. And Lauren? Yeah, that’s actually not her name. She was born Mary Laurence Hutton, but blame it on Playboy for the switcheroo: There were apparently too many cocktail waitresses named Mary, so she decided to riff on her middle name and go with Lauren, inspired by none other than Lauren Bacall. 6. She went to New York for two reasons: „To get to Africa, and for LSD.“ After her brief stint at the Playboy Club, Hutton returned to the Big Apple with the intent to get on a ship to Africa—and to see what the drug craze was all about. „I had read about LSD and it sure sounded like something I wanted to try,“ she laughed. After being stood up by both a friend and that boat to Africa at the docks, with only $200 in her pocket, she took a cab from Port Authority to the only address she knew: 57th and 7th (the location of Tiffany & Co., though she swears she never saw Breakfast at Tiffany’s before then). She then managed to get a hold of a kinder friend who allowed her to crash until she got back on her feet. 7. She first got into modeling by being totally dishonest. Hutton saw a want ad in the New York Times for a Christian Dior model, „experience required.“ Her friend’s boyfriend told her she needed to go to the audition anyway. „I said, ‚I don’t have experience,‘ and he said fcvfrankfurt.de , ‚Of course you do.‘ I had my first great New York lesson: Lie.“ She did get the job—though the fact that she offered to do it for less than minimum wage ($50 a week) was probably also a factor. – Continue Reading Below – Continue Reading Below 8. Those pictures of models jumping in fashion editorials? She started that. It was her first big shoot with famed photographer Richard Avedon, and things were not going well. „I was trying to be Veruschka, and that was terrible,“ she says. When, in the hopes of finding something that would inspire her canada goose sale , Avedon asked her questions about her childhood, she revealed that she used to love jumping over snakes. He told her to leap and jump in the photo, and the rest was history. „That started the run-and-jump pictures…because I couldn’t model.“9. The first time she felt like a supermodel, however, didn’t happen until years later. She had nabbed the cover of the newly born People magazine in May 1975. „The headline was, ‚She’s Got It All,‘ and I remember this chill went right up my back. That’s when I first felt like a supermodel.“ 10. She was the very first model to nab a beauty contract—and it was all her idea. Up until then, modeling was an occupation that was paid by the hour. But Hutton knew that she was a hot commodity—though self-depricatingly, she says it was by default. „Twiggy had quit, Veruschka was doing something else, Shrimpton was off doing something else—everyone had quit. I was the only one left!“ But when she caught a glimpse of a New York Times article about a man who had received a $1 million contract for his own job, she said, „How can I do that?“ She mentioned her idea to Avedon, who told her to up the ante and make it exclusive. She pitched it to Revlon, and in 1973, at age 31, she signed the first-ever modeling contract with Revlon for a sum of $400,000. She was the face of the mega-brand until they let her go about 10 years later. 11. Her secret to great style? 100% honesty—with yourself. – Continue Reading BelowAt age 70, Hutton obviously has years of industry expertise under her belt, but her theories on looking one’s best aren’t groundbreaking, they’re just straightforward. „People say you’re either born with style or you’re not,“ she says. „That’s hooey. Look at yourself in the mirror, really hard. [Style is] what suits you. Try to get rid of everyone else’s ideas of what you are, and take a good look.“ And yes, even the gorgeous, iconic Lauren Hutton says she doesn’t look good in everything. „If you put black on me? A nightmare.“
